What Are ACEs?

ACEs are Adverse Childhood Experiences, a term coined by
Dr. Nadine Burkes Harris from her work and advocacy as a pediatric doctor and medical professional in The Bay Area and as examined in her book, The Deepest Well.

ACEs encompasses any adverse and potentially  traumatic event(s) that occurred before the age of 18 years (Ages 0-17).

The events are categorized into ten (10) categories:

• Physical Abuse

• Verbal Abuse

• Emotional Abuse

• Sexual Abuse

• Physical Neglect

• Emotional Neglect

• Mental Illness

• Substance Abuse

• Incarcerated Relative

• Violence Against Mother (Primary Caregiver)
